Extravaganza is PASACAT's long-standing tradition: a biennial showcase that exhibits the highest caliber of PASACAT's artistic representation of Philippine folk dance. Due to the pandemic, we were unable to continue this tradition. With nearly two years of reflection, dreaming, manifesting, and preparing for the day we get to once again share our passion for our culture through the lens of the stage, we are overjoyed to present, Hiraya: Fruit of our Dreams!

"Hiraya" is an ancient Tagalog word meaning "fruit of one’s dreams, wishes and aspirations." It is often used in one’s wish to someone, Hiraya Manawari, meaning “May your dreams come true! May your wishes be fulfilled!”

35th Annual PASACAT Junior Concert

  • PASACAT Philippine Performing Arts Company (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

PASACAT has been in existence since 1970 teaching Filipino American teenagers and young adults about the culture of the Philippines through dance, music and song. In 1983, younger siblings of those teens and young adults were interested in learning and became the first batch of Juniors trained by Kenny Estigoy, Cindy Macatantan and “Uncle” Bob Tuminting. This resulted in the First Junior PASACAT Concert held at the newly opened Educational Cultural Complex in April, 1994.

In 1988, eight students became the first class of PASACAT’s Junior Program. Joji Ramirez Castro, 13-year Bayanihan National Philippine Folk Dance Company dancer, was brought onto staff to lead this new program. Their first concert was held in January, 1989 at St. Rita’s School Auditorium and the following year at the Educational Cultural Complex. The Junior Concert has been presented every year since, without exception. Even with COVID, the Junior Program continued on-line with more interactive sessions on Philippine history and geography.

The PASACAT Center has served as the home of all PASACAT artistry and as we bring the 35th Annual Junior Concert to our space, our home, we’re reimagining the PASACAT home to showcase the beauty and richness of the Philippines!

2020 Virtual Junior Concert

Join us via Youtube Live as we celebrate our 33rd Annual Junior Concert!

Bringing it to you 2020 Style, the 33rd Junior Concert is now the 2020 Virtual Junior Concert

2020 posed many challenges for the entire world. Continuing to be a part of our dancers lives bringing art to the center of their lives, we maintained our regular classes virtually. For 26 weeks we’ve completely flipped our approach by creating dance videos, activities, and online classrooms.  Aside from home activities, online games, lectures, movie nights, and of course dancing, we’ve been slowly moving towards the goal of putting on a virtual program . This years Junior Concert is special because it included the participation of our parents who recorded our dancers in costume at home.

PASACAT is proud to bring the 2020 Virtual Junior Concert to your homes on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Our youth dancers will not only dance for you but will also be our hosts throughout the program!

As we continue to keep the culture alive in our own homes, we hope that you can join us in celebrating our successes through these trying times. Bravo to these very young dancers for keeping PASACAT’s 50th Season bright.

Hibla Filipiniana: Shuttles of Unity, Threads of Identity

Hibla Filipiniana: Shuttles of Unity, Threads of Identity

In celebration of San Diego’s diverse design community through San Diego Design Week, PASACAT will feature Hibla Filipiniana: Shuttles of Unity, Threads of Identity; a representation of artistry and creativity through the work of Philippine hands. "Hibla" means fiber but it also symbolizes the embodiment of fabric and its connection to the user or wearer. Hibla Filipiniana reflects Filipino ingenuity in various art forms and has the power to unite resilient communities bound by living traditions.

This exhibit attempts to act as a dynamic looking glass into Philippine material culture and its practices as it relates to the performing arts of the various cultures featured in this exhibit. Dancers and musicians bring these pieces to life through a visual and auditory experience in an effort to transport you to the isles of the Philippines.

With intricate woven, carved and cast treasures, along with the sounds of native instruments, we explore the Muslim and Lumad communities of Mindanao, and with the energetic sounds of the Rondalla string ensemble, experience the the child-like joy of the lowland countryside of Luzon and the Visayas.

Hibla Filipiniana: Shuttles of Unity, Threads of Identity is a 4-part virtual museum series and is perfect for all ages. We encourage families to join and be entertained and educated through this specially curated collection of Philippine art traditions brought to life through music and dance.

Brought to you in part by San Diego Design Week in partnership with The Mingei International Museum
