Parol Festival Activites provide Haiyan Relief

[SAN DIEGO, CA] The Parol Festival will be held on December 7, at the Jacobs Center, Celebration Hall, 404 Euclid Avenue, San Diego, and will serve as another special event for the community to donate and show their support for the Philippines and the Typhoon Haiyan victims.

PASACAT will raffle two Parols, Philippine star lanterns made of capiz in which all proceeds will be donated to the Haiyan Typhoon Relief.

Another effort includes Spare Change for the Philippines.

The Parol Festival will also serve as a colleciton point for the community to donate items which will be sent via the LBC Foundation.

Joanne Tawfilis is coordinating free community mural project, “Healing Hearts for Haiyan”, a visual tribute and message of hope for the Philippines. The murals offer unique interactive artistic expressions on canvas in acrylic paint.

“So many of us have been emotionally touched by the stories coming from the Philippines,” stated Anamaria Labao Cabato, PASACAT Executive Director. “Sharing a piece of ourselves through art is a perfect way to heal!”

Tawfilis plans to send ten murals to the ravaged areas of the Philippines. The Art Miles Mural Project (www.artmiles.org) is a UNA USA locally based international project and recipient of numerous awards has contributed scores of murals during the past decades to survivors of natural and human disasters. The “beautiful murals provide endearing messages of hope and concern, long after the humanitarian aid disappears”. Many of the “healing murals” have been exhibited in museums throughout the world.

PASACAT anticipates other artists coming forward to offer free services for a donation towards the Typhoon Relief.

The Parol Festival is partially funded by the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, AT&T Cares Foundation, County of San Diego Community Enhancement Fund and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.

a Flamenco presentation, African drummers and dancers from Teye Sa Thiosanne, and Marvin Calderon, Jr. a top 28 contender in the 2013 American Idol competion as well as St. Rita’s Folk Choir who will sing Tagalog Christmas songs.

Attendees will be served a merienda of pancit, lumpia and pandesal, all included in the ticket price of $12 for adults and $10 for students. Discounts are available for groups of twelve or more.

The popular parol making workshops will give attendees the ability to make their own parol during the festival. The highlight will be the Parol Competition where winning parol designs and construction will receive $20 in the elementary, secondary and high school categories. The Grand Prize Competion will be awarded to the top three – first prize, $200, 2nd prize, $150 and 3rd prize, $100.00.

PASACAT will display a variety of parols, from hand-made parols by Jose Morales, Jr. and those from the Philippines, with a number of the more contemporary capiz shell parols available for sale. Cultural exhibits from PASACAT’s 43 year inventory of costumes, instruments and books will be on display for the community to get a glimpse of the history and culture of the Philippines.

The Parol Festival always concludes with the Pabitin, a bamboo rack strung with toys and prizes for children to grab as it is hoisted up and down.

“There’s so many people who feel so isolated in the world,” surmised Anamaria Labao Cabato, PASACAT Executive Director. “The Parol Festival is a wonderful way for families of all generations to connect, and with so many tragedies that surround us, we need to cultivate connections for stronger family ties which is the foundation for stronger community ties.”
